Feminism has proven its self to be so much more than a “man hating” ideology with the launch of 6 brave women into space – said no one ever.
The reaction to celebs in space I noticed was very similar to the reaction of the public when Mangione shot up the United Healthcare CEO. Spoiler alert, the reaction was not what your brain washers were expecting. The news of a CEO being killed was the front page story for days. Palestinian activists were angered that their people who are constantly being tortured and murdered have never been on the front page of any main stream media outlet. The overwhelming public were angered that their news outlets really thought that they would be saddened by the death of an insurance CEO. This time the overwhelming public were angered that their news outlets really thought that they would be happy about millionaire women bringing daisies to space for 10 minutes.
The Blue Origin spacecraft has been operating since 2021. So far, it has successfully launched 58 people into space and while they have not exactly disclosed how much one pays for a seat on the space craft, it was once sold in an auction for $28 million dollars so we can expect the price to be somewhere around there. $28 million dollars for 11 minutes. Imagine the difference that 1% of that could make on someone’s life. Imagine the different that 1% of that could make if it went into public funding like education. 1% by the way is $280,000. This was the main point of anger amongst those on social media expressing their thoughts on the most recent Blue Origin launch. Another point of this story that was ridiculed was the fact that they were celebrities. Like I mentioned earlier, 58 people have gone into space through Blue Origin including the most recent launch. This would mean that 52 people have gone into space through Blue Origin prior to the celebrities. With this spacecraft however, Blue Origin wanted to highlight the fact that they sent an all women crew into space, but the public could really only focus on the fact that they were celebrities. I’m sure we have all seen the Katy Perry meme of her bringing a dandelion into space or when she kissed the ground after landing. I mean, it’s funny! People don’t relate to celebrities for a multitude of reasons (rich, privileged, silent on issues that actually matter, etc) so to expect people to see this as a step for all women is unfair.
To go back to the meme of Katy Perry kissing the ground after landing, another conversation was brought up: climate change. Especially with the current Trump administration trying its hardest to smash all environmental programs and funding, climate change has been a burning topic on the news. Rather than their space craft releasing carbon dioxide, like many other spacecraft companies do, they release water vapor which to their credit is significantly better for the environment. However, the high levels of heat that the spacecraft lets off causes nitrogen in the atmosphere to turn into nitrogen oxides which are extremely harmful to our ozone layer. To put this into simpler terms, the ozone layer, which protects us from the suns rays, gets damaged and become weaker because of greenhouse gasses which are produced from fossil fuels. They are called greenhouse gasses because essentially what it does is trap heat in, similar to a greenhouse used for botanical gardens. The movement against climate change revolves around this call for a worldwide reduction of fossil fuels and in turn, greenhouse gasses. The effect that greenhouse gasses have on the ozone layer are basically the same effect that the nitrogen oxides released by the Blue Origin spacecrafts on the ozone layer. So, it has an overall negative environmental impact.
While space exploration as a whole does typically have negative effects on the environment, missions by NASA for example are used for research purposes. You know, like they are actually moving towards a goal that would be a massive achievement for the entirety of the human race. Space tourism, I hat to break it to you, but it doesn’t benefit anyone except for the rich who can come to their dinner table and tell there family what the earth looks like from above.
